The June meeting was called to order with the Pledge of Allegiance and an invocation from Roger. Birthday wishes were extended to David LeBron (June 5th), Roger (June 6th), and Merle Anderson and Janice Barack (both June 22nd), with a special acknowledgment of Paul Anderson, one of the club’s original founders, who would be celebrating his 95th birthday this month. Members then had the opportunity to share happy fines, with the President offering five of her own, covering everything from a missed meeting to bowling a 191 scratch.

Fairfield Family YMCA
The club was joined by Arthur, Executive Director of the Fairfield Family YMCA, who shared an overview of the tremendous work the organization does right here in North Long Beach. Serving over 6,000 participants annually, the Y offers a wide range of programming including swimming and drowning prevention, healthy lifestyle initiatives, child care, summer day camp, youth government and civic engagement, and before and after school programs. Arthur also highlighted a recent nationwide YMCA conference held right here in Long Beach, which drew nearly 1,700 staff and volunteers from around the world. Chris followed with a brief overview of the Y’s upcoming community fundraiser on July 25th at El Dorado Park — a free event featuring a softball tournament, car show, BBQ cook-off, fun zone, and live music. Families can register via QR code and volunteers are welcome.

Wiseman International (YMI)
Club member and YMI representative Tibor shared some fun YMCA trivia — did you know the Long Beach YMCA predates the city itself, founded in 1884, and that the YMCA is credited with inventing both basketball and volleyball? YMI itself was founded in 1922 in Toledo, Ohio by Judge Paul William Alexander, an early champion of juvenile courts, and today operates in 87 countries under the motto “The duty that accompanies every right.” Tibor spoke to the growing global partnership between YMI and the YMCA, their project-based FAST program, and their Rollback Malaria Campaign, through which YMI has donated $1 million as a UN-sanctioned NGO.
The evening was a wonderful reminder of just how much this club and its community partners are accomplishing together. From backpacks for local kids to global malaria prevention, the thread running through every conversation was a shared commitment to service. As always, thank you to everyone who showed up, pitched in, and made the meeting a success — we look forward to seeing you all next month.
