May 2025 Meeting Recap

Our recent Kiwanis meeting brought together fellowship, planning, and cultural enrichment as we discussed upcoming events and welcomed a special presenter.

Welcome & Membership

We were pleased to welcome Dan Ryan, a retired F&M Bank employee, who joined us as a potential new member. Our ongoing efforts to attract new members remain a priority, and we encourage everyone to invite friends to our upcoming social events.

Event Updates

Unfortunately, our traditional 2-club golf event won’t be happening this year due to the venue now charging for entire course rental rather than per-person fees. However, plans are underway for lawn bowling later this summer or early fall.

Special Presentation:
CSULB Japanese Garden

Mary Sramek, cousin of our own Stephen and director of the Cal State Long Beach Japanese Garden, gave a fascinating presentation about this 1.3-acre treasure.

Mary discussed her recent transition to the position and how the garden has evolved from primarily an event venue to becoming more integrated with the university’s educational mission. The garden now hosts programs like Camp Nugget, where university students pursuing Adapted Physical Education Teaching Credentials provide small-group instruction.

The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden serves as a living museum celebrating art, culture, and natural beauty throughout the changing seasons. Beyond hosting weddings and events in its serene setting, the garden functions as a learning laboratory supporting research, student internships, volunteer opportunities, and arts events through collaborations with CSULB faculty and other educational organizations.

Artists are welcome to find inspiration in this tranquil space, with dedicated art classes available for those looking to capture its beauty.
