The Kiwanis Club of Bixby Knolls/North Long Beach raised $12,144 during its annual Theater Night fundraiser last month.

Agatha Christie’s mystery, “Go Back for Murder,” was performed at the Long Beach Playhouse to a crowd of 150 theater enthusiasts. The money raised will sponsor three scholarships for Key Club high school seniors who are continuing with higher education, and sponsor the Kiwanis Middle School Citizenship Awards Luncheon this June, honoring students from seven Bixby Knolls/North Long Beach middle schools.

This year, the Kiwanis Club is celebrating more than 60 years of service to the Bixby Knolls/North Long Beach area.

The Jan. 29 event was coordinated by club President Myra Kremen, with board member Alba Swalheim managing the silent auction, which featured donated items.

The evening drew supporters from various area Kiwanis Clubs and the Long Beach Lions Club, including several groups that purchased 10 or more tickets: the Southgate Retirees,Downtown Long Beach Lions, bowling leagues from Cowboys, Fairfield YMCA and the Kiwanis Club of Downey. Distinguished Kiwanis leadership also attended, including past Gov. Carol Ferris, past Lt. Gov. Tony Diaz of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District, and incoming Lt. Gov. Hailes Soto.

Lydia House Women’s Shelter in Long Beach is one of the Kiwanis Club Foundation service projects, where, throughout the year, the foundation provides monthly dinners. The foundation also supports the Adopt-a-Family Christmas Outreach Program in December. Club members purchase Christmas presents for Long Beach families in need through the YMCA and deliver the gifts to them. A $100 Target gift card is included for each family.
